Mt. Popa is a spectacular site. The Taung Kalat Monastery sits on top of a volcanic plug that is about 170-180 m (560-590 ft) high and less than 100 m (330 ft) across. You reach the top by climbing 777 steps. As always at Buddhist sites, you have to go barefoot. Mt. Popa is a holy site, not just for Buddhists. Local legend has it that animistic spirits called Nats live in the mountain. There is a shrine for the Nats on Mt.Popa.
